Three things stack up. Heat rises, so the upper floor starts warmer. The roof above it absorbs sun all day while the ground floor is shaded by the house itself. And the ductwork feeding upstairs is usually the longest run in the system, so it arrives with the least air behind it. A single thermostat downstairs cannot see any of that — it satisfies itself and shuts off while the upper floor is still climbing. The fixes range from balancing the existing ducts to adding zoning or a separate ductless head for the worst room.

Check a standard one-inch filter monthly and expect to replace it every one to three months. Pets, carpet, allergies or ongoing building work push it to the short end of that. Thicker media filters in a cabinet typically run six months to a year. A blocked filter is the single most common cause of the callouts we attend: it starves the system of air, which makes it work harder, run longer, and in winter can trip it out on high limit entirely.

Because cooling and dehumidifying are two different jobs, and your air conditioner only does the second one as a side effect of the first. A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, which is far more efficient than electric resistance heat, and our winters are mild enough that it spends very little time in the conditions where that advantage narrows. Modern units also handle cold far better than the ones that gave heat pumps a poor reputation decades ago. Whether it beats your existing setup depends on what you are heating with now, so it is worth a conversation rather than an assumption either way.
